Description

The negative impact on environment and economy resulting from the use of non-renewable energy sources and plastic pollution, together with the limited availability of fossil-derived products, are the driving forces to make a major effort for achieving a sustainable production and conversion of biomass into industrial products and energy. In this context, the generation of a broad understanding of the molecular processes controlling plant agronomic traits related to crop productivity and biomass quality is the basic pillar for creating a sustainable and knowledge-based bioeconomy. In contrast to the wide use of genomic approaches for agriculture development, this debate will explore the applications of proteomic approaches for improving plant performance, but also for generating innovative industrial products.

This event, jointly organized by B·Debate, an initiative of Biocat and Obra Social “la Caixa”, and the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics with the COST Proteostasis action, will bring together multidisciplinary experts in biotechnology to create synergies that could facilitate this transition from a dependence on fossil-derived products to a sustainable bioeconomy, but also to begin achieving the consent and support of broader society to complete this transition.

This workshop is the first of its kind addressing plant proteostasis, but also addressing the translational aspects of plant proteostasis into fiber and oil plant breeding/industry. Overall, we foresee that this workshop will have a positive impact in plant proteostasis research, but also in economy and society needs regarding sustainability.

The science of plants: towards a green industry

One of the greatest challenges facing the industry and the economy is how to be sustainable. Due to climate change, it is now a pressing need that we move towards a society that prioritizes renewable energy and minimizes the use of contaminating plastics. On 27 and 28 September 2016 experts in biotechnology met at B·Debate to create synergies that could facilitate this transition from a dependence on fossil-derived products to a sustainable bioeconomy.
